mud season

A term used in Northern New England when late winter and early spring melting snow and rain make dirt roads and paths muddy. As temperatures warm, the frozen roads and paths melt from the surface down. When the lower layers remain frozen and the upper layers turn into mud, it can result in hazardous driving conditions and significant damage to roads, especially from heavy commercial vehicles.
