Missing tree(s)
In our absence, two more items have been crossed off of our six core decisions list: the towering pine is gone and the septic system has been made usable. The house looks different, sort of lonesome without the trees. The shade is gone, but so is the danger of it falling on whatever we accomplish with the house.
In addition to the pine tree, a large maple tree in front of the house is also gone. The top was dead and it provided the same risk to the house as the pine. A number of aging maple trees line the property border along the town road. A few of them have growth, but many of them are dead.
The house looks naked and alone. We’re not sure how to feel about the change. In the end, we stand by the decision and understand it was the right thing to do.
Somewhere to go
City mice don’t have to worry about where things go after you flush. But country mice will find that keeping a septic system healthy and in good working order is no easy chore. There’s special paper, desirable bacteria, routine inspections, and more. Even the feds — especially the feds — are concerned. Ours appears ready to go, and just in time.
