Connecting the house to the existing septic system being used by the RV had to be done. We weren’t really dreading the task, but none of us was in a rush to get started. Let’s just say that 10-foot section of four-inch PVC pipe designated for the primary connection was quietly moved around a lot for a week or so.
Digging the trench went smoothly. We had a small window of time between when the forms for the cellar were complete and when the concrete truck was expected to complete its task. There were rocks to contend with, but all minor compared to dealing with the cellar floor. We dig across the crawl space and remain ever mindful of the slope.
Most older properties in Vermont have only one bathroom. It’s not unusual for rural homesteads to have multi-hole outhouses, some indoors, though most are not in use. When the builder learns we aspire to put in more than one bathroom he screws up his face and asks, “Well, just how much do you need to sh*t?”
We get things in place, but not everything is glued down. Without a floor, and with the floorplan constantly in transition, we can only guess where drains and commodes will be located. At least the primary connection is in place. Now we just need to keep things capped to discourage the release of unpleasant odors. Thank goodness for duct tape.
